The first key: The synthesis
Summarizing is essential to conclude a coaching session. This allows you to summarize what has been accomplished and reinforce learning. It is important to summarize the key points of the session to allow the client to integrate the new information and become aware of the progress made. It is also an opportunity to look back on the highlights and awareness points. The summary can take different forms: a verbal summary, written notes, a drawing or a diagram.
The second key: Actions to take
An effective coaching session conclusion not only looks back, it must also look to the future. It is therefore crucial to establish the actions to be taken before the next session. These actions are steps to take towards the client’s objective. They must be clear, achievable and motivating. By defining these actions, the coach offers the client a concrete plan to continue to progress. This could be reading a book, practicing a new habit, or thinking about a specific question.
The third key: Validation of acquired knowledge
At the end of the coaching session, it is important to take the time to validate what you have learned. This step, often neglected, is nevertheless essential. It allows you to measure progress, recognize the work accomplished and strengthen self-confidence. To validate what has been learned, the coach can, for example, ask the client to tell what he has learned, to explain how he intends to use this new knowledge or to say what has changed for him.
To conclude, each coaching session is unique and requires a suitable conclusion. It is important to stay on the lookout, continue to learn and experiment. The conclusion of a coaching session is as important as its beginning.
